Waikanae Wanderings: Ngā Manu Nature Reserve

Today’s wander takes us to Ngā Manu Nature Reserve, a place many people have heard of, but not everyone has actually taken the time to explore.

Tucked just minutes from the centre of Waikanae, Ngā Manu is a 14-hectare wildlife reserve filled with native birds, wetlands, bush tracks, eels, tuatara and quiet boardwalks where you can slow down and get close to Aotearoa’s natural world.

It’s the kind of place that works beautifully for all ages. Families can follow the tracks, spot birds, visit the eel pond and look out for tuatara. Visitors can experience a slice of local ecology without needing to travel far. And locals can use it as a gentle reset; a peaceful green escape close to home.

Ngā Manu has been part of Waikanae for a long time, too. Since 1974, the Ngā Manu Trust has been working to protect and restore some of the last remaining coastal lowland swamp forest in the region. The reserve opened to the public in 1981 and has been an important part of conservation, education and local life ever since.

Right now, there’s something new to look out for as well: a fresh entrance mural by local artist Theo Arraj, giving the reserve a bold, modern welcome as soon as you arrive.

If you’ve never been, think of Ngā Manu as a relaxed mix of nature walk, wildlife sanctuary and quiet escape. It’s peaceful, full of life, and just minutes from town.

A reminder that sometimes the wildest little adventures are hiding right here in Waikanae.
