Waikanae Wanderings: Waimanu Lagoons Reserve

Today’s wander takes us to Waimanu Lagoons Reserve, one of Waikanae’s calmest, prettiest spots for a short walk, a bit of fresh air and a gentle dose of nature.

If you’ve ever walked the loop here, you’ll already know it’s basically a bird paradise. On any given day you might spot goslings wobbling across the grass, black swans cruising the water like they own the place, pūkeko darting around the edges, ducks gathering in groups, and all kinds of little signs that this quiet corner is full of life.

Set just beside the beach, Waimanu Lagoons feels like its own peaceful little ecosystem. The water winds between the houses, the coast sits just beyond, and the estuary connects everything together in that very Waikanae way: relaxed, open, and close to nature.

The fully sealed track makes it an easy wander for families, prams, bikes and slow Sunday strolls. You don’t need a big plan or a long afternoon; just a little time to walk, breathe, look around and let the birds do their thing.

It’s peaceful, accessible and full of life.

Take a wander and see for yourself.
